Weaning Questions

Your baby can start straw training with StarTouch Drinking Cup which promotes healthy oral motor development and has an easy-to-sip straw which encourages natural drinking. The cup is spill- and leak-proof too, which makes it great for outdoors! However, as every baby has different likes and development pace, we have different products to cater to their different needs. If s/he has some difficulty to progress from Teat to Straw, you can let them have a step-by-step transition starting with SofTouch Training Straw (6M+), and then progressing to SofTouch Drinking Straw (12M+). They are created to provide similar feel to SofTouch teat while training the baby to progress to straw drinking. StarTouch Adapter & Straw Set can be purchased at a later stage, for outdoor usage.
That’s okay! Make it a fun, no-pressure experience and bond with your baby. Try blowing through the straw gently to show how it works. You can even dip the straw in water or milk and let a drop touch their lips.
It is developmentally normal for babies to bite or chew on a straw as they seek jaw stability while learning to suck, but you can redirect this behavior by using a short, soft straw that is both safe and easy for them to manage. To encourage proper sucking rather than biting, place the straw tip on the lower lip instead of inserting it too far into the mouth, which helps promote natural lip closure. Additionally, you can provide gentle jaw support by placing your fingers at the base of your baby's jaw to help them stabilize their mouth and focus on the coordination needed to draw up liquid.
If your baby coughs occasionally while learning, it is often a normal part of the process, but you should watch for consistent signs of difficulty like repeated coughing with every sip, frequent throat clearing, a wet or gurgly voice after drinking, or visible signs of distress. These indicators may suggest the flow is too fast or your baby needs more time to coordinate the swallow, so you can support them by offering only single sips, squeezing the straw slightly to decrease the flow rate, or using naturally thicker liquids like purees that move more slowly. Additionally, providing gentle jaw or cheek support and practicing careful pacing by pausing to let your baby catch their breath can help them manage the liquid more safely and comfortably.
Weaning from a bottle to straw cup should be a gradual transition starting from 6M onwards. To start, check for readiness signs such as if your baby is able to sit upright with minimal support and shows interest in what others are eating. To support your baby’s weaning transition, gradually replace bottle feeds with milk in a straw cup rather than eliminating bottle-feeding immediately. Learning to sip from a straw unlocks new oral motor skills and it can take time for babies to adjust. Some babies take a longer time to adjust or require comfort from bottle feeds. Offer encouragement and keep the weaning process stress-free.
You can prompt lip closure by gently tapping the straw on your baby’s bottom lip before inserting it slightly. This tactile cue helps them realize they need to seal their lips to create suction.
Proper Posture & Pacing are key. Ensure your baby is sitting in an upright position. To prevent them from getting overwhelmed, provide rest breaks by pausing between sips.
For the SofTouch™ Wide Neck BPP Step Up Straw Bottle Set, New and Old Connector and Gravity Ball Straws are cross-compatible. The older generation of connector / straw can be used with the new generation of connector / straw. However, for an optimal usage experience, it is ideal not to mix the old and new parts as the overall length of the straw will differ slightly.

If your MagMag Cup is leaking, it could be due to the white gasket being improperly placed. To ensure it's leak-proof, make sure the protruding part of the gasket faces you during assembly. Please check the following:
  • • Is the gasket attached?
  • • Are the air valves fully pressed in the "Closed" direction? Ensure the valves are securely set by pressing them from both sides.
  • • Is the straw hood completely closed? The cup is designed so that tilting it causes the contents to flow out of the straw tip. If the hood is fully closed, there should be no leakage.
